When the idea came to me about writing an article for making money online, I was prepared to explore and explain why an online business is probably the easiest way for regular folks to make significant income in the 21st century. Then it occurred to me how many people really want to succeed, but; so few actually do.

As I thought, I actually had more questions than I did answers. Is it the people themselves that create the failure or is it the industry we are in? I don’t know that I am the one to expertly answer the question; but, I do know that to succeed at an online venture, a plan and some skills are required. You can possess those skills when you start, you can learn them or you can buy them. None the less, to succeed online, you must be able to offer something to somebody that they want or need, compel them to get it from you and then deliver said “thing” to them. You then get paid for you effort. Simple enough it all seems.

Why then, if making money online is really just that easy why do so many people fail? My answer, failure to plan! When I started my first online endeavor I hardly knew how to get past the start page from my ISP. With all the hype in today’s media, more and more users are pouring onto the information superhighway everyday. Many of them have no more experience that I did when I got started. Regardless of the hype you may read, a lot goes into creating a successful online business.

How do you get products or services, how do you build a website, do I really need a website, do I need to accept credit cards, how will I get visitors to my website? Like a child in an ice cream store that can’t decide what flavor to pick, choosing an online business opportunity is much the same. They all look so good, which one do I chose? All too often the flavor that looked so good in the case just doesn’t satisfy like it was supposed to. So it goes for online business opportunities, as well.

If you are truly serious and you want to make money online; you need to make a plan and stick to it through thick and thin, no matter what. First, decide exactly what it is you would like to do; there are thousands of different ways to make money online, then educate yourself about operating that type of business online. The making money part will come later.

Once you have some vision about what you would like to do, make a plan to get there. You should learn in your research what exactly is needed to operate the type of business you are interested in. The list can go on and on, to make it manageable, break it down into steps that you can take to measure your progress. Don’t try to do it all at once.

Expect that in the beginning you will fall down, loosely translated, fail; many times over before you find the combination that creates a successful online endeavor. Because an idea doesn’t work, doesn’t mean you’re a failure, it means the idea didn’t work, period. If something doesn’t work like you thought it should, figure out what didn’t work so well and press on. All the while, follow the plan you have created for yourself.

When I say follow your plan, what I am trying say is this; just when it seems all is lost in an endeavor and you are frustrated, another opportunity always seems to come along to divert your attention. If you jump ship to something else, all the effort you put into your first endeavor is lost. Soon you find yourself awash in a sea where nothing seems to work and you have spent a lot of money for nothing; it becomes easy to quit. Where as, had you followed your original plan and overcome the hurdles that came up, you would be so much further ahead. A breakthrough usually occurs when you are at the end of your rope. The old adage “The grass isn’t any greener on the other side of the fence” is so true when it come to online endeavors.

So, what’s the secret ingredient to make money online? In one word lies the answer: Persistence.

In my last article I talked about the 5 proven strategies for making money working online and how to work out which one you should chose to pursue, taking into account your resources and personal strengths.

I promised I would share with you my own successes and failures in pursuing each of the 5 strategies. Of course it’s important to understand how success is achieved, but most of the gurus in time have confirmed that they learnt more from making mistakes. It was in correcting the mistakes that they found success, so it follows that getting out there and taking action, any action, may not lead to immediate success but will almost certainly lead to a mistake or learning experience that will propel you forward to success if you persevere.

It is also worth pointing out that these are just my personal experiences based on what has worked for me.

Before we dive in, it’s worth considering that the five methods we have been talking about in this article series can either be applied individually, or maybe a couple adhoc or even all of them collectively as part of a higher level meta strategy. In other words your approach will depend on the time, money and resources available to you, and your grand vision in your quest to make money working online. You can either find one that works for you and just stick at that. Or you can work on several together or pick the strategies off one by one.

In fact if you stop to analyse the methods you will perhaps notice that the order we have covered them is almost a stairway or building block that will allow you to make real money online. Advertising is easy, low cost and quick to get you off the mark. Yet to make money through Participation methods at the top end you generally need to invest a lot more time, effort and resources and really need to have built up a following or customer base, some of whom will be prepared to pay for your high end participation products. This system is what you may generally have heard called the sales or marketing funnel where you start with free or low cost items through blogging or affiliate marketing, and then build up to ecommerce and participation products and services that tend to be higher ticket items. Strategy 1 – Advertising

As we have previously established, this generally refers to making money online by selling your advertising space on your site(s) or blogs. Personally I had 2 issues with this strategy. Firstly I felt that the time and effort in setting up and configuring services like adsense that places content relevant adverts and links on your site did not match the small rewards.

The other issue for me was that my overall goal was to sell my own products and services and so I did not agree with the principle of sending traffic that had landed on my site to another site via the advertising. This is why many internet marketers set up dedicated blogs or traffic sites which are purely there for the purpose of driving traffic to their links. So if you are going to pursue this strategy as your best way make money online, that would be my advice – set up specific traffic sites or blogs. Blogs are free so are a great cost effective way of doing it.

For me, having quit my job and with 2 young children, I needed to make money online fast so I had a couple of websites that were there to promote my own products and services as part of my overall strategy. So it did not make sense to divert potential customers away from my sites by using them to advertise just anything.

My approach to advertising therefore was not so much to make quick money online from it, but to trade advertising space with reciprocal links to other established service providers to my target market who also had existing traffic. This worked tremendously well as it meant I kept my costs low, got very targeted traffic for free, and built my brand and reputation quickly by association.

This reciprocal approach has served me very well. Although I did not understand it in the early days, it has also helped with search engine optimisation and placed my sites higher in the search rankings – generating extra traffic for free.

I’d just like to point out that these are my personal experiences and may not be the same for you. Thankfully there is usually more than one pathway that leads to success – you just need to find the best way to make money online for you.

Affiliate Marketing

This is where you basically get paid for promoting somebody else’s product. It can be a book, service or goods, and you get part of the sale proceeds and part goes to the original retailer/writer. This really can be one of the best ways to make money online fast. The secret is research to find your target market with sufficient willing buyers for the right product. Then set up a simple one page website or review blog to tell people about the product – often give them some info for free. Then set up a Pay Per Click campaign to attract interested prospects to send along via a link to the sales page of the person promoting the product. Any sales are then linked back to you so you get your commission. No handling money, customer queries or stock.

As you can see, this is relatively simple and something that you can turn on or off and leave pretty much on autopilot once you have your adwords campaigns working well. There are of course other ways to attract traffic for free including article marketing, blogging, social bookmarking etc but pay per click allows you to turn on the traffic almost instantly – if you know what you are doing.

And here we have one of the two major issues with affiliate marketing. If you don’t know what you are doing with pay per click then it can be very, very time consuming and very expensive to constantly monitor, test and tweak your campaigns. It is an amazing traffic tool but I personally found that whilst the basics are relatively easy to follow, to be successful at it is a really steep learning curve. It is also a very competitive arena and the methodology is constantly updating. For me I found that whilst I really wanted to master it as I love technology, it was just too time consuming and I did not have the luxury of time as I was on a mission to replace my income by finding the best way to make money online fast.

The potential way around this of course is to find someone who is an expert in pay per click and outsource the task to them. We won’t go into that now but suffice to say that as with any service providers there are good and bad ones so always try to go by recommendation if you can. Elance is a good online site to find IT people you can source tasks to. Personally I found someone skilled I could trust and traded my skills and services with theirs to achieve win-win for us both.

The other issue with affiliate marketing of course is finding the right product that is going to make money online. Again this is a topic in its own right and is where I failed in not doing sufficient research on keywords and market share to ensure there was a sufficient pool of willing buyers out there to target.

Affiliate marketing is a superb strategy that works and the beauty of it is that it can be set up to be fully automated to make money online fast and hands free.
